Whoop 3.0 Hands-On, CrossFit & Full Review
Verdict: Great Sleep Tracking, Unreliable HR Tracking
Open 20.4
I did this workout compared to the Apple Watch 5, and the Whoop severely underperformed. The WOD started at the 16:30 minute point and lasted the full 20min, but the Whoop missed the mark significantly, whereas the new HR monitor on the AW 5 (and 4) is superior to all, and tracked it excellently. It missed the JR average by 20 bpm, which means the exercise evaluation is untrustworthy.
Assault Bike Workout.
This is the Whoop 3.0 versus a Polar H10 chest strap and the Garmin Venu. The Whoop handled the main high points well, other than two HR drop periods.
Stationary HIIT Workout.
The Whoop handled this workout fine, for the most part - but had a significantly irregular high rate in the beginning of the workout. The average turned out to be closer to the H10 Chest Strap, so might have been a little accurate than the Venu, but all turned out close as this workout had very minimal wrist flex.
Open 20.2
This workout showed the errors in the wrist based optical heart rate monitors, and it was clearly exposed in the multiple wrist movements. Whoop 3.0 tracked considerably lower, and more erratic than the Chest Strap
Assault Bike EMOM 15
Every minute on the minute - 5 x 20/40, 5 x 30/30, 5 x 40/20. The Whoop tracked the intervals pretty well, but not the total overall output as the H10 came in with higher overall Average Heart Rate.
Open 20.3
Here is the Whoop against 20.3 - I believe it tracked just so-so, as the heart rate was likely higher in the first few minutes - I started at roughly the 9 1/2 minute mark. I didn't have a chest strap functioning so the analysis is only slightly worthwhile, also the handstand likely killed some of the tracking, and had to be broken up considerably, so the heart rate might have been lower due to muscle failure as well. Showing it alongside the new Samsung Galaxy Active2.
